Ozempic: A Growing Trend

“Discipline is choosing between what you want now and what you want most.” — Abraham Lincoln
In a culture fixated on weight loss, medications like Ozempic and Wegovy have garnered widespread attention, raising concerns about their long-term effectiveness and potential health impacts. Originally developed for managing type 2 diabetes, these drugs have proven effective in promoting weight loss by suppressing appetite.
Around seven million Americans now take a GLP-1 drug, as they are called, and estimates predict that by 2035, the number of US users could expand to 24 million [1]. Several well-known celebrities have spoken about using Ozempic or Wegovy to manage weight, including Oprah Winfrey, Charles Barkley, Amy Schumer, and Elon Musk. This surge in popularity highlights a growing reliance on quick fixes and their impact on health.

GLP-1 Medications: How They Work

Ozempic and Wegovy work by mimicking a hormone called GLP-1, which signals the brain to reduce hunger and slow the emptying of the stomach, leading to a feeling of fullness. Clinical trials show that users can lose 15-20% of their body weight on these medications. GLP-1 drugs not only curb appetite but also shift food preferences, making ultra-processed snacks unappealing or even repugnant.
However, these medications are not without drawbacks. Common side effects include nausea, vomiting, and fatigue, while more serious risks may involve gallstones and pancreatitis. Discontinuing the drug often leads to weight regain, suggesting a potential long-term dependency. Prolonged use may also contribute to additional health concerns, including loss of bone and muscle mass, neurological complications, and an increased risk of thyroid carcinoma [2].

Managing Hunger Through Blood Sugar Control

It is important to underscore that Ozempic was originally designed as a treatment for type 2 diabetes, where its primary function is to help regulate blood sugar levels. The overconsumption of carbohydrates is a widespread problem in our society. For many, the sensation of hunger is caused by a drop in blood sugar rather than true physical hunger. Given this, it’s no surprise that drugs like Ozempic, which are effective in managing blood sugar, also help curb appetite.

A Holistic Approach to Weight Loss

An effective approach to weight loss, without relying on GLP-1 drugs, begins with understanding the dietary habits that destabilize blood glucose levels. One of the best tools for this is a continuous glucose monitor, which offers invaluable, personalized insights into how food impacts blood sugar levels.

A Healthier Path Forward

Weight loss is a personal journey, and what works for one person may not work for another. For many, knowledge alone is not enough; mental barriers must be overcome to make informed choices. Regardless of the approach, it’s essential to address the root causes of weight gain and pursue solutions that are sustainable over time. In doing so, individuals can achieve lasting health without resorting to quick fixes that come at a cost.
