your body as having a delivery and storage
system.

to where it is needed, especially the bone
marrow, where it is used to make hemoglobin

The Four Main Tests
Ferritin: Your stored iron. Think of this as the
warehouse inventory
Serum Iron: The amount of iron currently
circulating in your blood. These are the boxes
currently on the delivery trucks.
TIBC (Total Iron Binding Capacity): Your
blood’s capacity to carry iron. This represents
the number of delivery trucks available.
Transferrin Saturation (TSAT): The
percentage of those trucks that are actually
carrying iron. This tells us how full the trucks
are.
Low Ferritin Does Not Mean “Take Iron!”
Many people see a low ferritin level on their
blood test and assume they need an iron
supplement.
The problem is that ferritin is only one piece
of the puzzle. Looking at the entire iron panel
provides a much clearer picture.

- Low stomach acid
- Proton pump inhibitor use
- H. pylori infection
- Celiac disease
- Blood loss
